Operation Guide for B&R X20CP1585

1. Basic Hardware Overview

The X20CP1585 is a fanless CPU module for B&R X20series PLC systems, equipped with an Intel Atom processor, 128 MB DDR2 RAM and 1 MB SRAM. The application program and runtime firmware are stored on a removable CompactFlash card.

2. Installation & Wiring Procedure

1. Mount the module on a standard DIN rail with reserved clearance for heat dissipation; horizontal installation is recommended.

2. Install the X20TB12 terminal block and connect the 24 V DC power supply with correct polarity.

3. Complete X2XLink backplane connection with adjacent X20 I/O modules, and install the X20AC0SR1 end cover at the right end of the rack.

4. Insert a properly formatted CompactFlash card into the CPU card slot.

5. Connect corresponding communication cables: Ethernet for Automation Studio programming, POWERLINK for realtime fieldbus communication, and RS232/USB for local device servicing.

Warning: The CPU module does not support hot swapping. Disconnect the 24 V DC power supply before installing or removing the module.

3. FirstTime Poweron & Bootup

1. Inspect all wiring and insulation conditions, then apply 24 V DC power.

2. The DC indicator lights up, and the R/E LED blinks green during system initialization and hardware selftest.

3. Normal boot completion: R/E LED remains solid green, and the controller is ready for project download.

RDY/F solid yellow: The system enters boot/service mode with no valid runtime image on the CompactFlash card.

R/E solid red: Fatal system error; check for CF card failure, firmware corruption or hardware faults.

4. PC Connection & Communication Setting

Required software: Automation Studio (runtime version must match the CPU firmware version)

1. Set the PC IP address to the same subnet as the X20CP1585 (default IP: 192.168.0.1, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0).

2. Establish an Ethernet connection between the PC and the CPU Ethernet port.

3. Create a new project in Automation Studio, select the X20CP1585 hardware model, and configure rack I/O modules, communication parameters and task schedules.

4. Establish online connection by selecting the target device via IP address. The USB service port can be used for local debugging when Ethernet is unavailable.

5. Project Download & Runtime Operation

1. Compile the project with zero errors.

2. Download the compiled project to the controller; the runtime firmware will be written to the CompactFlash card automatically.

3. Perform warm or cold restart as prompted after download completion.

4. The CPU enters RUN mode with a solid green R/E LED. In STOP mode, the application program halts and all I/O outputs are deactivated.

Warning: Mismatched runtime and project firmware versions will cause boot failure and abnormal operation. Always keep consistent version matching.

6. Normal Operating Functions

Run / Stop / Service Mode Switch

Software control: Switch RUN, STOP, RESET, WARM RESTART and COLD RESTART via the Automation Studio online panel.

Hardware control: Adjust the rotary switch to enter BOOT/DIAG mode for firmware recovery and system diagnosis.

Data Backup & Restore

Full project backup: Save offline project files via Automation Studio.

Onsite system backup: Copy system data via CompactFlash card (power off the device before card removal).

Parameter backup: Export variable and parameter files through the online diagnostic tool.

Note: SRAM data and realtime clock rely on the internal backup battery. Replace the battery regularly per official maintenance specifications.

Communication Configuration

POWERLINK: Configure MN (Managing Node) or CN (Controlled Node) mode in hardware settings.

Ethernet: Modify device IP address and gateway via project configuration or builtin service webpage.

X2XLink: Automatically detects and identifies all X20 I/O modules on the backplane after poweron.

7. LED Fault Diagnosis Guide

DC LED OFF: No 24 V power supply, broken wiring or blown internal fuse.

Continuous green blinking R/E LED: Boot failure caused by corrupted CF card or missing/damaged runtime firmware.

Solid red R/E LED: Fatal system failure due to hardware defects, invalid firmware or CF card damage.

CF LED OFF: CompactFlash card undetected; reinsert or replace the card.

No ETH LED activity: Ethernet cable fault, IP address mismatch or abnormal switch port status.

No PL LED blinking: POWERLINK wiring error, missing terminal resistor or incorrect node configuration.

Solid yellow RDY/F LED: System in boot mode with no valid runtime image; reflash firmware and project program.

8. Common Troubleshooting Steps

Device Boot Failure

1. Verify stable loaded 24 V DC operating voltage.

2. Reinsert or replace the CompactFlash card and confirm complete and valid runtime firmware.

3. Ensure the rotary switch is set to normal operating mode instead of BOOT/DIAG mode.

4. Perform a cold restart: power off for 3–5 minutes and repower on.

Automation Studio Connection Failure

1. Check PC subnet settings, Ethernet cable integrity and link status.

2. Ping the CPU IP address and disable system firewall to block no communication.

3. Restore default IP by entering service mode via the rotary switch if the IP address is unknown.

Intermittent Crash & Watchdog Reset

1. Check 24 V DC voltage fluctuation and ensure cabinet temperature is within the rated range.

2. Inspect X2XLink bus connection, terminal tightness and onsite EMC interference.

3. Analyze system logs for CPU overload and cycle overrun alarms.

4. Export complete diagnostic logs for further professional analysis.

Battery Warning Alarm

Low internal backup battery triggers system alarms. Replace the battery in time to avoid loss of RTC time and SRAM retained data.

9. Maintenance Notes

The module contains no userserviceable internal components; disassembly is prohibited.

Strictly implement static protection measures when handling the CPU module and CF card.

Battery replacement must comply with official B&R operation procedures.

Back up all project data before module replacement; reinstall runtime firmware and application programs for new hardware.

Export system logs regularly for predictive maintenance and fault tracing.

10. Safety Remarks

All wiring and installation operations must be performed with power disconnected.

Only B&R compatible CompactFlash cards are allowed for system operation.

A cold restart is mandatory after firmware upgrading or project modification to activate new configurations.
