Working Principle of Applicom PCIE2000ETH
The Applicom PCIE2000ETH is an intelligent PCI-Express-based industrial Ethernet communication card. It establishes highly reliable data connections between industrial PCs (HMI, SCADA, MES hosts) and on-site PLCs and other automation devices via Ethernet.
Equipped with a dedicated on-board embedded processor, the card locally handles industrial protocol parsing, cyclic data polling, frame encapsulation and decapsulation, error detection and link maintenance. These operations run independently without consuming the host CPU resources, eliminating communication bottlenecks on the host side and ensuring real-time data transmission for industrial applications.
When installed into the PCIe slot of an industrial PC, the card creates a high-speed point-to-point data path with host memory over the PCIe bus. Its RJ45 Ethernet port connects to the factory industrial network. Supported manufacturer-specific industrial Ethernet protocols operate on-board to enable bidirectional data communication with remote PLCs from Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, GE-Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Omron and other brands.
Configuration items such as device addresses, polling intervals, tag mapping and protocol selection are downloaded to the on-board flash memory using Applicom configuration software. After initialization, the hardware performs autonomous cyclic read-and-write operations on registers of field devices, and stores raw data in a shared-memory region accessible by host-based applications.
Upper-level application software retrieves process data through the OPC-DA server, ActiveX controls, DDE or dedicated APIs. Control commands sent from HMI or SCADA are passed from the host PC to the card over the PCIe bus, packaged into matched industrial protocol frames, and transmitted to field controllers through the Ethernet interface.
An integrated watchdog circuit continuously monitors communication health. In case of network disconnection, packet loss or device offline events, the card generates diagnostic status bits and alarm messages, and reports them to host applications for fault indication and handling.

Power is supplied through the industrial PC PCI-Express ×1 slot, drawing 3.3 VDC and 12 VDC power from the motherboard PCIe bus. Typical power consumption ranges from 3-5 W. No external power supply is required.
