Working Principle of Cameron AAP3798102-00140

AAP3798102-00140 is an electro-hydraulic control module for Cameron wellhead choke and ESD valve systems. It acts as the signal processing and driving interface between the host control system and hydraulic actuator, performing closed-loop position regulation, continuous status monitoring and safety interlock functions.

The module receives remote setpoint commands for target valve opening from DCS, PLC or local operator panels over communication links. Simultaneously, it continuously samples analog feedback from the valve position transducer, hydraulic pressure sensor and internal temperature circuit. These analog signals are filtered, isolated and digitized internally to suppress noise from vibration and electromagnetic interference.

Its onboard real-time control algorithm compares the target setpoint against the actual valve position to calculate deviation. According to configured PID gains, dead band and stroke limits, it outputs drive signals to the hydraulic servo solenoid valve. The solenoid adjusts the direction and flow of hydraulic oil to move the actuator stem toward the target position. This closed-loop cycle repeats until the position falls within the allowed tolerance, then the drive output is maintained to stabilize the valve.

ESD signals are monitored at the highest priority via hardwired inputs. Upon ESD activation, the module overrides regular control commands and drives the solenoid to move the valve to its predefined safe state, fully closed or open. This safety sequence works independently and remains effective even when host communication fails.

Internal diagnostic circuits run parallel to the control loop. They detect sensor wire break, signal out-of-range, low hydraulic pressure, power anomalies and over-temperature. Once a fault is detected, the module logs fault codes, triggers the front panel fault LED and sends alarms to the upper system. It executes preset fault responses, such as holding position or forcing a safe state.

The module supports dual redundant power inputs. Its power monitor automatically cross-checks both power paths and switches to the healthy source seamlessly to avoid control interruption. Calibration data, alarm thresholds and control parameters are stored in non-volatile flash memory and loaded automatically after power restoration.

Local manual override uses internal signal switching logic. When enabled, the module ignores remote setpoints and accepts local switch signals for valve stroke testing and commissioning. Operators can switch back to remote closed-loop control after completion.

This unit has no integrated hydraulic power assembly. It only handles signal conditioning, control computation and solenoid driving, and requires an external hydraulic power unit and actuator for valve movement. Isolated circuit design separates sensor, solenoid and communication circuits to suit hazardous area installation and limit surge and short-circuit spread.

Main Features of Cameron AAP3798102-00140

It offers closed-loop position control for hydraulic choke valves. The module continuously captures position feedback signals and modulates hydraulic drive output to sustain accurate valve opening. It provides rapid response upon emergency shutdown triggers and can finish the valve stroke within the defined safety time once ESD commands are received.

It incorporates multi-channel signal acquisition circuitry to monitor hydraulic supply pressure, actuator position feedback, input voltage and internal temperature in real time. Onboard diagnostic logic automatically detects wire breaks, out-of-range signals, low hydraulic pressure and internal circuit faults, and transmits fault flags to the upper-level DCS or PLC system.

It accepts redundant power supply input. Dual power feed enables continuous operation and prevents shutdown caused by a single power path failure. Integrated protection mechanisms cover overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent and short-circuit conditions for internal circuits, enhancing reliability under unstable power supply at well sites.

It features corrosion-resistant circuit design that meets NACE requirements. A wide operating temperature range allows it to withstand extremely cold and high-temperature field conditions. The hardware complies with offshore EMC specifications and delivers stable performance amid heavy electromagnetic interference, vibration and high humidity on offshore platforms.

It is equipped with standard communication interfaces for status and parameter data exchange with host control systems. Operators can configure stroke limits, control gains, alarm thresholds and ESD action modes locally. All adjusted parameters are saved in non-volatile memory and preserved after power loss.

Front-panel LED indicators display power status, operational state, fault alarms and ESD activation, allowing field technicians to quickly assess module status without host software. A local manual override function is available for valve testing and commissioning during maintenance work.

It adopts a compact rack-mount form factor for seamless integration into Cameron wellhead control panels. It can operate standalone or work alongside other Cameron control modules to build a full wellhead control package for oil & gas production, test separators and manifold control skids.

This module does not contain an integrated hydraulic power unit. It only carries out electrical control and signal processing, and requires an external hydraulic supply and matching actuator to drive valve movement. It holds hazardous area certification and is qualified for Class I Division 2 explosive atmospheres.
