Detailed Description of Communication Interfaces for FOXBORO FBM232 RH926GW
Front-panel External Ethernet Interface (RJ45) Physical Connector: One copper-based RJ45 port mounted on the module front panel. Transmission Standard: Compliant with 10/100Base-TX, supporting auto-negotiation for 10 Mbps / 100 Mbps transmission rate as well as full-duplex and half-duplex modes. Galvanic Isolation: 600 V AC galvanic isolation is implemented between the external local area network and internal module fieldbus circuitry, which safeguards the DCS backplane against surge disturbances originating from external networks. Network Topology: It shall be connected to industrial-grade Ethernet switches or hubs. A single FBM232 module can handle up to 64 third-party field devices within the same LAN segment. IP Configuration: Static IP assignment or DHCP acquisition mode can be configured through the FDSI configurator software. Transport Layer: Integrated TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocol stack. Actual protocol functions are realized via downloadable driver packages, covering Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP. Indicator LED: Link-and-activity LED provides visual feedback of physical link condition and real-time data traffic for on-site fault inspection.
Back-plane Redundant Module Fieldbus Interface (48-pin Dual Connector, RH926GW Baseplate) Physical Connection: Dual gold-plated 48-pin backplane connectors which mate with the RH926GW baseplate. Hot-swap operation is permitted without system power shutdown. Bus Specification: Redundant dual-channel 2 Mbps HDLC serial Module Fieldbus, the proprietary internal bus for Foxboro I/A-Series and Foxboro Evo DCS systems. Redundancy Mechanism: Path A and Path B operate under hot-standby mode. Upon failure of one communication channel, the module performs automatic switch-over to the healthy channel, ensuring uninterrupted data exchange between the module and controllers. Connected System Devices: It communicates with FCP270, FCP280 field control processors and FCM100E / FCM100Et field communication modules over the backplane bus. Data Service: Collected data from third-party devices is delivered to the DCS control database through a maximum of 2000 DCI (Distributed Control Interface) data points. Meanwhile, read-write commands issued by DCS are forwarded downward to external Ethernet-connected devices. Power Supply: 24 VDC operating power for the module is fed from the baseplate through the identical backplane connector; no separate external power wiring is necessary.
Logical Protocol Interface & Data Conversion Boundary External Side (Ethernet): Functions as protocol master for attached field devices. Available protocols are determined by pre-downloaded driver files, such as Modbus TCP master and EtherNet/IP adapter. Internal Side (Module Fieldbus): Raw data from external protocols is converted into standardized DCI data objects identifiable by Foxboro DCS, including integer values, floating-point figures and packed digital status data. Protocol conversion is executed locally inside FBM232, so as to reduce protocol parsing burden on main controller CPU resources.
Interface Restrictions & Important Notes Only one physical external RJ45 Ethernet port is provided. A second LAN port for network cascading or network-level redundancy is not available; external network redundancy has to be implemented by independent industrial switch hardware. The 2 Mbps Module Fieldbus on backplane is a dedicated internal DCS bus and shall not be directly interfaced with any third-party external equipment. The minimum configurable scan cycle is 500 ms. Practical refresh latency varies according to device quantity, communication payload and driver execution efficiency. All communication-relevant parameters including IP address, device list, scan period and point mapping relations are configured via the XML-based FDSI configurator tool. FBM232 itself contains no local physical buttons or embedded web-UI for on-module parameter adjustment.

FOXBORO FBM232 RH926GW Field Device System Integrator Module Key Characteristics

Product Overview The FBM232 RH926GW is an Ethernet-enabled field device integration module within the Foxboro I/A-Series DCS platform. It acts as a dedicated communication gateway bridging Foxboro DCS systems and third-party smart field devices.

Communication Interface It features one 10/100 Mbps copper-based RJ45 Ethernet port. Through a 48-pin backplane connector, it links to the redundant 2 Mbps module fieldbus and communicates with FCP270, FCP280, FCM100E and FCM100Et controllers. Seamless redundant fieldbus path switchover is supported to avoid communication outages.

Device Access Capacity A maximum of 64 external field devices can be connected. Up to 2000 DCI (Distributed Control Interface) data links are available for transmitting analog signals, discrete single-bit digital signals and grouped multi-bit digital data. The minimum scan cycle is 500 ms; actual performance depends on the response capability of external connected devices.

Supported Industrial Protocols It utilizes downloadable protocol driver libraries. Major supported protocols cover Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU/ASCII over Ethernet and EtherNet/IP. Raw data from third-party hardware is converted into DCS-recognizable standard data formats, such as integer values, IEEE single-precision floating-point numbers and packed digital points.

Data Processing Function Core capabilities include protocol translation, user-defined data mapping and signal data buffering. Collected field information is imported into Foxboro I/A-Series and Foxboro Evo control databases for control logic execution, operator HMI display and alarm management workflows.

Configuration Mode Configuration is completed via the XML-driven FDSI configurator tool. Engineers can set port parameters, assign device addresses, define scan intervals and finish point-to-point data mapping. All validated configuration files are saved locally inside the module hardware.

Hardware & Environmental Performance The module carries Class G3 harsh-environment qualification, suitable for field-side installation. Its operating temperature spans from -40 °C to +70 °C. On-board LED indicators show module running status, network link conditions and fault information. It conforms to EN 50081-2 and EN 50082-2 industrial EMC specifications for robust noise immunity.

System Compatibility It provides native compatibility with Foxboro I/A-Series and Foxboro Evo DCS platforms. Inter-operation is available for third-party PLCs, smart transmitters and other automation hardware that comply with supported industrial Ethernet protocols. Hot-swap operation on the backplane baseplate is supported.

Fault Diagnosis & Monitoring Continuous built-in self-diagnosis runs on the module. Malfunctions including communication breakdown, device offline status and configuration mistakes are reported to the upper DCS system. Front-panel status LEDs deliver intuitive on-site visual guidance for troubleshooting activities.
