KONGSBERG 37960309 (TBSS Serial Switch Terminal Board) Installation Steps

Pre-installation Preparation

Disconnect the main cabinet power supply and verify zero-voltage condition at the installation location. Examine the module for physical defects including casing damage, bent pins and deformed connectors. Fit a 35 mm standard DIN-rail inside the marine control cabinet, maintain a minimum 20 mm vertical ventilation clearance at top and bottom, and avoid installation adjacent to high-temperature components. Prepare compatible cables for TBSS bus, TBSL-RS232, TBSL-RS422 and 24 VDC power connections prior to assembly.

DIN-Rail Mechanical Mounting

Engage the upper latch of 37960309 onto the top edge of the 35 mm DIN-rail. Firmly push down the lower section of the module until the locking mechanism audibly clicks into place. Install end stoppers on both sides to secure the module and mitigate shifting caused by vessel vibration. Maintain vertical mounting orientation; upside-down or horizontal installation is prohibited.

Power Wiring

Terminate the 24 VDC power source to designated power terminals. Operating voltage spans 18-30 VDC, with typical operating current of 120 mA and maximum inrush current of 280 mA. Strictly respect polarity, as reverse polarity will destroy the integrated 512S48URD DC/DC converter. Torque screw terminals to manufacturer-specified values and apply wire ferrules for multi-strand cables. Inspect for exposed copper conductors to eliminate short-circuit hazards.

Serial Signal Wiring

Attach the TBSS bus input cable to its corresponding terminal. Terminate TBSL-RS232 signal conductors to TBSL-RS232 input terminals. Preserve twisted-pair integrity for TBSL-RS422 differential signals. Physically segregate serial signal cables from power cables to reduce EMI interference. Wire RS-232, RS-422 and TBSS switched serial output lines according to official system schematics. Apply distinct labels to all signal cables for subsequent maintenance work.

Inter-Module Bus Connection

Implement TBSS bus daisy-chaining between 37960309 and other Kongsberg K-Chip modules. Ensure the bus termination resistor is properly mounted at the physical endpoint of the TBSS bus segment.

Pre-power-on Inspection

Visually confirm all terminals are adequately tightened and perform pull-tests on every cable connection. Use a multimeter to check terminal voltages and rule out short-circuits between power and signal circuits. Do not connect analog or discrete DI/DO wiring since this unit functions exclusively as a serial communication switching board.

Power-on and Hardware Initialization

Restore 24 VDC cabinet power supply. Monitor module LED status indicators: confirm constant illumination of power LED and absence of fault alarm signals. Allow 30-60 seconds for the onboard DC/DC converter and serial interface circuits to finish boot-up sequence.

System Configuration & Commissioning

Run Kongsberg Site Manager software on the engineering workstation and establish communication with the K-Chip marine automation platform. Import project-specific configuration parameters for the TBSS serial switch terminal board. Set TBSS / TBSL protocol attributes including baud rate, data bits, parity and channel-switching routing logic, then download the validated configuration to the 37960309 hardware.

Functional Verification

Initiate serial data output from upstream field devices. Monitor inbound and outbound RS-232 / RS-422 data streams using diagnostic utilities within Site Manager. Validate serial channel switching performance against design requirements. Check for communication dropouts or data corruption under vibration-simulated conditions and complete commissioning documentation.

Final Installation Completion

Secure cabinet doors and fasten all cable glands. File wiring diagrams and configuration backup files for reference. The module is now ready for regular onboard marine operation.
