Core protection functions

Busbar low-impedance percentage differential protection (ANSI 87B) delivers fast, selective tripping for internal phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth faults in solidly or low-impedance earthed systems, and internal multi-phase faults in isolated or high-impedance earthed systems.

A sensitive differential stage detects high-resistance busbar earth faults (typical primary current range: 300–2000 A). It is activated externally via a binary input and features an independently configurable operating characteristic.

The overall check zone (ANSI 87B supervision) maintains substation-wide stability regardless of disconnector auxiliary contact status, preventing maloperation caused by incorrect zone position signals.

Open CT detection monitors CT secondary circuits for open or short-circuit conditions. It can block differential protection and trigger configurable alarms and logic actions.

Dual differential supervision: persistent high differential current triggers a delayed alarm, while excessive through-fault current activates an immediate alarm. Both functions operate per phase and connect to disturbance recorder and alarm contacts.

RADSS percentage restraint with enhanced heavy CT saturation stabilization ensures protection stability for external faults even under severe CT saturation. Stability is preserved when the CT remains unsaturated for at least 2 ms per cycle.

Dynamic zone selection (software busbar replica) supports up to 6 freely configurable differential zones and 12–24 bays subject to device variant, eliminating the requirement for auxiliary multi-bay wiring.

Zone interconnection / load transfer logic automatically merges two differential zones when both bus disconnectors of a feeder bay are closed, with an adjustable time-delayed alarm available.

Switchgear status monitoring verifies dual auxiliary contacts (NO/NC) for each primary switching device and feeds status data into the zone selection logic.

Backup overcurrent protection suite: directional phase overcurrent (OC4PTOC, 4 stages), non-directional single-phase overcurrent (PH4SPTOC, 4 stages), and directional residual earth-fault overcurrent (EF4PTOC, 4 stages). These can serve as end-fault or blind-spot backup protection.

Circuit breaker failure (CBF) back-trip logic is integrated with differential trip outputs.

Autoreclosing function (SMBRREC, ANSI 79, maximum 2 reclose shots) and up to 3 sets of synchrocheck / energizing check (SESRSYN, ANSI 25).

Control, monitoring and auxiliary functions

Bay control (QCBAY) and APC30 control for up to 6 bays / 30 objects, including interlock functions.

Group alarm, group warning and group indication logic (ALMCALH / WRNCALH / INDCALH), 5 instances for each function.

Full phase-separated current measurement; primary CT ratios can be set locally or via PCM600 software.

Synchrophasor measurement with 32 phasors, compliant with IEEE 1344 / IEC/IEEE 60255-118 (C37.118) for wide-area monitoring applications.

Built-in disturbance recording, event logging, and front-panel HMI equipped with LCD, push buttons and local access interface.

Common Faults and Troubleshooting for ABB REB670 1MRK002820-AG

IED fails to power on with no LED indication

Cause: Loss of auxiliary supply, blown fuse, supply voltage out of rated range or reversed wiring polarity.

Solution: Measure auxiliary supply voltage; replace damaged fuse; correct wiring polarity and ensure voltage operates within rated specification.

Internal Fail LED / ADC module failure alarm

Cause: Damaged ADC hardware, I/O bus communication failure, module checksum error or firmware incompatibility.

Solution: Reboot the IED and retrieve fault records via PCM600. If the alarm persists, replace the defective module and verify firmware compatibility; contact Hitachi Energy support for hardware maintenance.

Unstable differential protection / spurious differential current during external faults

Cause: Reversed CT polarity, mismatched CT ratios, CT saturation discrepancy or incorrect disconnector auxiliary contact signals.

Solution: Validate CT wiring polarity and primary CT ratio settings within PCM600; inspect NO/NC auxiliary contacts of disconnectors; tune RADSS saturation restraint parameters.

Open CT circuit alarm activation

Cause: Open circuit on CT secondary side, loose terminal connections or shorted CT wiring.

Solution: Safely isolate the corresponding bay; inspect CT secondary terminals and cables; eliminate open/short faults; reset the alarm after fault clearance.

Zone selection logic fault, incorrect bus zone identification

Cause: Improper wiring of disconnector auxiliary contacts, erroneous logic configuration or inconsistency between dual contact signals.

Solution: Check NO and NC auxiliary contact status of each disconnector; review dynamic zone configuration in PCM600; rectify zone interconnection and load transfer logic.

Loss of IEC 61850 / GOOSE communication

Cause: Disabled Ethernet access point, non-ABB incompatible SFP module, broken fiber/Ethernet cable, IP address conflict or mismatched GOOSE publish/subscribe datasets.

Solution: Enable relevant communication access points; replace with ABB-certified SFP module; inspect cable and fiber integrity; resolve IP conflict; align GOOSE publisher and subscriber datasets.

Time synchronization failure (Time Synch Fail)

Cause: Lost PTP / IRIG-B synchronization source, incorrect time protocol setup or damaged sync cable.

Solution: Check time source equipment and connections; validate time synchronization parameters inside the IED; restore the time reference signal.

Protection fails to trip for internal busbar faults

Cause: Protection function not enabled, improper differential pickup/restraint settings, active binary blocking signal or damaged trip output contact.

Solution: Confirm the protection function is activated; examine setting group parameters; clear external blocking signals; perform binary output forcing test and verify trip circuit continuity.

I/O module alarm / I/O bus timeout

Cause: Poor backplane contact of module, hardware failure of I/O module or parameter checksum error.

Solution: Power down the device and reseat the I/O module; download valid parameter configuration; replace faulty I/O module if the error remains.

Disturbance recorder unable to capture fault waveforms

Cause: Incorrect trigger logic configuration, insufficient storage space or disabled recording function.

Solution: Activate disturbance recording function; verify trigger conditions; check storage capacity and sampling parameters via PCM600.

Breaker failure (CBF) logic fails to issue back-trip command

Cause: CBF function deactivated, defective binary input for breaker position, improper timer setting or blocked inter-trip GOOSE signal.

Solution: Enable CBF protection; validate binary signals of breaker status; adjust CBF timer value; inspect GOOSE intertrip communication path.

Abnormal HMI display or inaccessible local interface

Cause: Front panel hardware defect, corrupted firmware or disabled local access port.

Solution: Restart the IED; activate front communication port; reload application firmware; replace HMI assembly in case of hardware damage.
